An Iowa winter is one of the toughest environments a vehicle faces all year. Sub-zero mornings, road salt, and short trips that never let the engine fully warm up all add up. A little prep now prevents a no-start in a frozen parking lot later.
1. Test your battery
Cold weather can cut a battery's available power by a third or more. A battery that was "fine" in October can fail on the first hard freeze. A quick load test tells you whether it'll make it through winter.
2. Check tire tread and pressure
Pressure drops about 1 PSI for every 10°F the temperature falls, and worn tread loses grip on snow and ice. Both are quick to check and critical for stopping distance.
3. Top off and test fluids
Make sure your coolant is rated for Iowa lows and your washer fluid is winter-grade so it doesn't freeze on the windshield. Thicker, cold oil also makes startups harder if it's overdue for a change.
4. Inspect belts and hoses
Cold makes rubber brittle. A belt or hose that's already cracked is far more likely to fail when temperatures plunge.
5. Check your heater and defroster
Beyond comfort, a working defroster is a safety must. If it's slow or weak, it's worth diagnosing before you actually need it.
6. Build a winter kit
Keep a blanket, gloves, a flashlight, and jumper cables in the car. If you do get stuck, you'll be glad you did.
